How do you know that you’ve hired the right freelancer to design your website?

top

You could do some checks. Look at their CV and their portfolio. But there is always a small part of doubt when hiring a freelancer, a jump of faith. Sites such as CrowdSpring, 99designs and e-lance all hire out their freelancers without even getting to know them or even checking their previous work.

Our Friends at Clearleft (a great design agency based in brighton) have stumbled onto a website that looks an ickle bit like theirs, when I say ickle I really mean it’s an exact replica. Strangely enough the code is slightly different, however that doesn’t get away from the fact that the design is a complete copycat.

The company in question is ironically called Hire-Experts.com and here’s their response on get satisfaction:

“Hello ClearLeft employers, I’m very sorry for this issue. I’m really surprised not less than you. We don’t have a designer so we’ve hired freelancer to do it for us about 8months ago. I’m trying to contact him to solve this problem. Anyway I promise that our site design will be reworked from the scratch within 24 hours. It is 9.30 pm here but I’ll do best of us to solve it asap. I hope for your understanding, please be patient. Again sorry for this ugly issue.”

Posted on get satisfaction after Paul had been informed of the clear copycatting, you can read in full here

They weren’t the first, and won’t be the last. Here’s a gallery of other ripoffs:

My designer colleague & I were JUST discussing this topic. We both specialize in things not web, but are in the process of developing our own websites. My artist friend recommended iWeb as being really intuitive and quick. Turns out the templates contained there, and obviously downloads available far and wide, mimic quite a few of the layout features in the pages you’ve labeled “copy cats.”

Where, then, is the line between copying and using a template?

Hi Patty, the problem here is that clearleft didn’t use a template, therefore in this case it is copying.

Templates are generally a good starting point for anyone new in web design, but for anyone working as a freelance designer you kinda expect original content designed in line with the company’s brand guidelines.
