Swanning about the Alternative Advent Calendar

13/12/2011 | Cool Design, Featured | Katherine Sola | No Comments

French photographer Philippe Jarrigeon uses food to create contemporary, creepy still lifes. We love this eerie picture, with predatory swans picking their peer apart. It’s part of a series called Festin, which means ‘feast’ or ‘banquet’ in French. We love how the angles of the bread triangles contrast with the natural swan curves and those hungry necks curving into the frame. The bread swan is bigger and more graceful than the real-life birds, and we appreciate Jarrigeon’s skill when his edible statue is compared to the real thing. But to put the real and imitation swans in dialogue with each other necessarily leads to the disappearance of the latter. Fascinating stuff – and it certainly brings new meaning to the phrase “you are what you eat. To see more of Jarrigeon’s glossy magazine photography, click here.
