Is this the end of the Business Card? nah.

So far this information age of ours has put an end to some of the more traditional things in life; sending letters to your loved ones in the post, popping down to the chemist to collect your photos, getting off your couch to do your grocery shopping… But something that seems to have survived this iCulture (so far) is the humble business card.  For something that’s been around for so long and as old fashioned as it seems, if smartphone apps were going to finish it off, surely it would be a thing of the past by now…  there’s obviously something keeping it around.

The first attempt I remember at digitalising the business card came through the green and black screen of the early 2000′s Nokia phones; where you were given the option of sending your ecard through SMS, or if you were really up-to-date; ‘infrared’.

A decade later, the attempts are still rolling in, dozens of smart phone apps have been trying to revolutionise the business card with their own smart version, we’ve got: Hashable, the app that involves adding your new contact to a pool of sharable names through a slightly complicated #hashtagging system.  Jumpscan, the card app that uses printable QR codes and the famous Bump; where you get to ‘cheers’ your phone off of your potential client’s, exchanging details, while at the same time looking slightly smug.  All very clever, but when you just want to slide them your card and get out of there quickly, smartphone apps can be a tad messy,  especially when the other party isn’t fully fluent in smart phone.

And when originality is key, what’s the use when everyone’s card looks the same?   Patrick Bateman would be turning in his fictitious grave.   Here’s a few cards that take originality, creativity and sometimes company expenses to the extreme.

Yep, the business card – especially in its more interesting manifestations – lives on. It’s one of the smaller physical examples of how really good, well designed print can do things other media can’t, because it goes to parts of the brain the others don’t; and can engage more of the senses (not just sight but also touch, hearing and smell. In fact the new toners on our KM press are also edible, or at least foodsafe, so we’re working on a business card you can eat).

Every now and then things are changing and getting modernized! many enhancements and new changes and improved things have arrived! really! But something that seems to have survived this iCulture (so far) is the humble business card and of course its end will also come with the newer things!
