Forget The Olympic Stadium – The Best Stadiums In Football

24/1/2011 | Cool Design | Paul | 2 Comments

As Spurs and The Hammers (you have to love football nicknames) battle it out for the Olympic Stadium, we look at the best stadiums already built and the best in planning. Let’s hope the prototypes becomes reality…

There has been much melodrama and abusive finger pointing over the Olympic Stadium in London’s East End. West Ham (Genuine East Enders) want to keep the running track and make the stadium available to almost every sporting team in a 100 mile radius, alert the Essex Tiddlywinks society someone. Tottenham Hotspur (North Londoners) want to knock it all down and start again, improving Crystal Palace Athletics stadium to keep up with the whole giving is better then receiving theme. Of course, Crystal Palace is in South London but I don’t want to confuse anyone any further!

Frankly, I don’t care who gets the stadium in Stratford. Partly because I don’t follow either team (I’m keeping that under wraps!) and also because the end result has already been surpassed in quality several times. If you’ve seen the plans for some of the stadiums for the World Cup in 2022 in Qatar, then it will be surpassed a few times more in the coming years. Club and country loyalties aside, and purely from a design aspect, I have selected a few of my top current stadiums and ones in the pipelines.

  • As with most really good stadia, The Allianz Arena was built for a World Cup. Bayern Munich and rivals 1860 Munich share this futuristic, neon affair. Top marks from me…

  • It’s a bit old and out of date compared to some others, but The Estádio do Maracanã in Brazil, has to be included because of its sheer impressive size. It is also iconic, it is Brazil’s stadium after all.

  • The Estadio De Luz, home to Lisbon’s Benfica, was made for Euro 2004 and has an amazing atmosphere. The reverberating roof means opposition teams are always in for a wall of sound when they visit.

  • This is the proposed Doha Port Stadium in Qatar. With an expected capacity of 44,950, it’s not the biggest in the World, but it is jaw droppingly impressive to look at!

  • The venue for the World Cup final in 2022, The Lusail Iconic Stadium is pretty flabbergasting. The stadium will even be surrounded by a  moat, incase fans need to cool off from the searing desert heat.

I hope none of these stadiums have made you feel a little bit depressed about renewing your season ticket for your team. If there are any you like that haven’t been included, please let us know…
