Font Friday Strikes A Game

14/10/2011 | Cool Design | Will | No Comments

It’s Friday again and there’s that weekend, stretching ahead of you.

Is it filled with obligations, parties, and fancy dinners, or perhaps nothing more than a good book and some quiet moments. Well it doesn’t matter, either way we feel that you’ll be spending it trying to get the perfect score on this new design game – Kern Type. The aim of the game is simple, get the letters aligned correctly, and then it scores you out of a hundred. As well as being fun (and slightly addictive) it’s also educational. Like all the best games. It teaches you to understand letter spacing and kerning, valuable assets in today’s modern world.

Though it’s an interesting game, more interesting is the company behind it. Method describe themselves as “peer to peer education for people who want to get things done. Learn by doing, participating and teaching.” As Kern Me is their first effort it’s hard to judge, but it’s a very exciting start, and one with a lot of potential. Keep you’re eyes peeled for a blog they’ll be doing on the why’s of kerning.

Typography is one of those skills that doesn’t reward those who are skilled with it. When it’s done well people don’t notice it, but when it’s done badly well… Being a master at typography can take years to achieve, even with all the fancy applications that now exist to help you out. But imagine doing it by hand. On stone. Your eraser’s not going to much use here. Take a look a Dom Hans ver der Laan working his magic and showing you how it’s really done.

If you need something designed then why not submit a brief on the Creative Services Exchange.
