Everybody’s Heard About The Bird

Although I’m not much of a techie, I do go on an app spree in the iTunes store now and again.  The only thing is, I never really end up using these digital spirit levels or compasses that looked so useful when I downloaded them. Angry Birds on the other hand, my only form of commuter’s entertainment, is much more addictive than I expected.  I’m ashamedly turning into one of those phone-gaming types on the bus.

The app, which saved parent company Rovio from bankruptcy, has just been knocked off its 275 day top spot in the UK & US iTunes charts by ‘The Heist.’  The one-per-second selling puzzle app that rewards you with Apple store offers at the end of each level.  However, after 200 million downloads,  Angry Birds, seen here in  viral cake version is still going strong.

Partnering up.  Just announced today, Rovio have partnered with the TV-internet people Roku. This Finnish company, who specialise in reasonably priced set top boxes, are dedicating a channel to Angry Birds animated shorts and introducing merchandise sales and game play.  Although, something tells me that firing birds across your telly using the arrows on your remote won’t be as much fun as catapulting them with your thumb.

The Live Show. In May, Barcelona was the scene of the birdnapping, where Saatchi & Saatchi worked with Rovio to create a real life Angry Birds level in Plaça Nova as part of Deutsche Telecom’s “Life is for sharing” campaign.  Days of work and months of prep were put into the construction of this playable replica, complete with exploding pigs and authentic brass theme music.  Passers by could control the whole thing from a phone in a kiosk.  Players used the smartphone to aim the birds and air cannons fired them.

In a similar marketing move, last weekend, McDonalds in Stockholm hosted ‘Pick n’ Play,’ where passers by could connect with a billboard sized screen in the city centre, play a game of ping pong, win and pick up a free milkshake.

I’m a huge fan of this game and have completed all the levels of all three flavors of this game till date. After completing all the levels and then reading about the hype of this game over internet, I feel its somewhat over rated, but again can’t neglect to play when new levels come up. The best time to play is while commuting. Certainly not the best app, but maybe a must have app.
