What are the main benefits of screen printing over digital prints?
It’s the purity of the colours.
More than that, it’s the fact that you have to print your stuffs one by one and by hand. This makes the object a kind of collector. It’s artisanal so it’s a continuity of the artist work, isn’t it? A not very expensive piece of art you can own. Anyway the quality of the paper and inks make screen printing more beautiful than any other printing process.
What’s your #1 Fear?
I think it’s to be in a hospital bed or in a very bad Health situation at the end of my life and realise I didn’t do all the things I wanted to. That’s scares me everyday. I know one life won’t be enough, there’s so many exiting things to do in life… More than that take care of people you love and continue to purchase your goals is not a simple affair.
(Question from crowd member James Kelly)
Having worked with loads of great guys over the years I feel the most important part of a growing team (besides being a good worker), is friendship. Do you feel staff relationships are important in creative environments?
Not really, I mean if the guys you work with are good, it’s ok. You don’t have to be friends to be creative together. It’s an alchemy. I have lots of friends I won’t collaborate with just because I don’t want any trouble hahah. When you work on a project with a team there are lots of ups and downs, frustration and the debate can turn really bad.
I’ve had some bad experiences in the past so so I’d rather see my friends at the pub than having them buzzing around me at work.
whats the best piece of career advice you’ve ever been given?
My first artistic director Angus Sinclair, who works for the agency Design Day in Paris told me one day : “If you want to make some noise to be heard using your hand on the table, don’t do it with your finger but with your fist!”.BLAM!. In graphic design, it’s the same, don’t be scared to put the elements in a shy way, the images will be more impactfull. There’s also very famous Paul Rand’s words :”Don’t try to be original, just try to be good!”, it rules!
whats the key to designing with impact?
A good brief analyse, to know who is the target. What is the message? What the client is waiting for and how can I make it out of the scale. After that, you can use some very simple typography and composition tricks to make your idea stronger.
