A Sinful 21st Alternative Advent Calendar

This new Banksy sculpture was unveiled just yesterday in Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery. The artist is best known for his graffiti images and socio-political critiques. This piece is jestingly titled Cardinal Sin, and it’s been widely interpreted as a comment on the Catholic Church abuse scandal. The Church is alleged to have covered up abuse perpetrated by priests against children, details of which are still emerging. Banksy has sawn off the face of a replica 18th-century bust of a priest and covered it with bathroom tiles. He said in a statement: “At this time of the year, it’s easy to forget the true meaning of Christianity – the lies, the corruption, the abuse.” We think it’s interesting that he physically re-created pixellation. It’s unusual to see a digital effect like that in real life, and the result is startling. Just another reason we love Banksy.
